Athletes Need Support Not to Be Afraid, – Elizaveta Tuktamysheva Comments on Betina Popova’s Wish to Jump Off the Roof The 2015 world champion has spoken about the pre-season training, Gabrielle Daleman, new programmes, her honours degree and suicide in sport
The coronavirus pandemic has put sport on pause. It is not unlikely that in 2020, we can only expect to see Russian competitions. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva has told a “Sportsdaily.ru” (Rus: Sport Den Za Dnem) correspondent that she will not be upset, but will adapt to the present circumstances.
The 2015 World and European Figure Skating champion is still a role model. While others choose to retire at 20 (like Maria Sotskova) or start a family at 22 (like Yulia Lipnitskaya), at 23 Tuktamysheva is learning to perform new quadruple jumps, unwilling to give way to younger figure skaters.
In a long interview to “Sportsdaily.ru”, Elizaveta has shared her opinion on a number of topics, including the disturbing ones such as the issue of suicide among former athletes.
– “When we go
on ice, we will have difficulties with our vestibular system. This will really
be tough,” that’s what you said in May. So how has it been?
– In principle, so it was, the vestibular system had suffered
after such a long break. But as the muscle memory is long-term, it has been
possible to restore the shape quite quickly. But I will be honest, it was very
hard in the beginning.
– When Dmitri
Aliev complained that his whole body was aching after he completed a quadruple
jump at his first practice, his fans severely criticized his coach Evgeni
Rukavicin in the comments. Tatiana Mishina has told me that Alexei Mishin would
hardly ever allow you to attempt such a difficult jump at the very first
practice.
– Several days have definitely passed [since the first
practice] before my first serious jump. I had to prepare my body and vestibular
system by making lots of exercises. One must work hard to perform difficult
jumps, not just attempt to do them. Everything was logically thought out.
– How is your
quadruple toe loop jump doing?
– I have been trying to perform a salchow, not a toe
loop jump. For some reason it was easier to start with it. Of course, it is still
difficult; one cannot deny that. I can twist, but I have not yet had a neat
landing. But one could expect this. No-one was wearing rose-coloured glasses.
– How satisfied are
you with the choice of music for your new programmes? How easy was it to transfer
them to the ice?
– I am very pleased with the choice of music in this
season. The short programme was developed in Italy before the lockdown,
together with Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte, that is why there have been no
problems with it. It was more difficult with the free skating. We developed it during
the lockdown, on the floor in a flat. When we went on ice, all the movements
had to be adapted. Everything felt a bit different. But it seems to me that
most movements have remained and the programme looks worthy.
– What does Alexei
Mishin say? Are there grounds for any critique now when you have not yet spent
a month on the rink?
– We are satisfied with the pre-season training. A
great job has been done. Fresh air, mountains, sports camp, the ice… We have
improved the physical condition. So far everything goes well.

– One of the major events of the off-season is Mikhail
Kolyada joining your group. Were you surprised? Or did you know this scenario
was possible?
– I supposed this could happen. But anyway I was
surprised when it actually happened.
– Mikhail has not updated his Instagram account since 6
November last year. How is he doing? Has he had an opportunity to impress you
on the rink yet?
– Let him tell you all about it when he decides the
time is right. But on the whole, the atmosphere in our group is good. We have
warmly welcomed Mikhail. I hope he will feel comfortable skating in our group.
– Shall we expect
serious progress from Evgeni Semenenko or Gleb Lutfullin training alongside
such an experienced figure skater?
– I think such sparring could only do good to male
figure skaters. It will be interesting to observe the young athletes adopting
something from Mikhail Kolyada, in terms of character or skating.
– “Such sparring
could only do good to male figure skaters”. One is tempted to ask if it is
different for female skaters?
– At least, for me it is different.
– “Our massage
therapist has lost the bet to Sofia Samodurova. She was to perform an axel jump
and she did. I don’t know what he will have to do, but something interesting.
Watch…” – and here your video on Instagram ends. Can I ask you, as they do in a
popular Youtube show: “What happened next?”
– (laughing) I can’t tell you until I post the video.

– How are your skating friends, Anastasiia Guliakova and
Sofia Samodurova, doing?
– So far so good. Going step by step, doing everything we
can. The girls are doing their best.
– Alexander Zhulin
considers that all international competitions planned before January might be
cancelled. Will you be very upset if this happens?
– I don’t think I will be upset. I will adapt (smiling).
– There is always a silver lining. They say the Cup of
Russia might reach a new level.
– If there is more advertising and the Cup can bring
together leading athletes, then more fans will come. The more there are
spectators, the more emotional the competition becomes for the athletes.
– This might sound rude, but currently the Cup of Russia
does not seem to interest leading figure skaters much, does it?
– On the whole, they do their job. But if one manages
to make the Russian competitions more popular, this will be very good.
– A difficult and sad topic, the death of Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya
who committed suicide. What can you say about it?
– To be honest, I don’t want to comment on this.
– I am asking you because you are friends with Betina
Popova. The latter gave an interview to the Match TV channel in early July, in
which she confessed that at some point, when she had struggled to lose weight,
she wanted to jump off the roof. Were you not shocked by this confession?
– I have known Betina for a very long time… She has experienced
difficult moments in her life, that is true. I think many athletes have.
– Would you agree that such stories show once more that there
should be psychologists in the groups?
– A psychologist or somebody else, anyway athletes
require support, so that they don’t feel afraid to come to the trainings, for
example. This does not only depend on psychologists, but on the group as a
whole, coaches and other professionals surrounding the athletes. One should
help another, then everything will be all right.
– Do you have such
a person who you could share your innermost thoughts with?
– Yes, I do.
– Who is it, if that
is not a secret?
– I am not going to tell you, but there is such a person.
– Given this, is it easier for you to cope with
psychological difficulties?
– I wouldn’t say it is easier. I am just not into
masochism. But this way or another, it is good when there is someone beside you
who you could talk to.
– Have you seen in the news that Gabrielle Daleman has
won a beauty contest in Ontario and can now have a chance to represent Canada
at the Miss World contest?
– Yes, I have seen this. But as long as I know
Gabrielle, she has always been dressed well, has always had perfect make-up.
One could feel she loved to have her hair and make-up done. She has always
looked after herself. So I was not surprised to find out about her victory.
Thanks to figure skating, she has gained an experience of attracting attention
and the need to always look well.
– Looking at her example, don’t you wish to try yourself
at some beauty contest as well?
– No. I am not tall enough for this type of events
(laughing).
– Do you think they are still paying attention to this?
– To be honest, I have never watched such a contest in
my entire life. But I still think height does matter.
– From your female
perspective, who is the prettiest female figure skater in the world?
– I don’t like this question. There are many beautiful
female figure skaters. And after all, beauty is a broad term. Every human being
is beautiful.

– You have recently boasted about your honours degree.
Could you please tell more about your degree work?
– The degree work was about perfecting the performing
skills of young figure skaters with an emphasis on choreography. I was writing
about how important it is to make children familiar with various types of dance
from the early age. They must hear the music. In figure skating, it is
important that the children understand what they are dancing and could be as
varied as possible. I prepared long for the defence, so it was not hard. When
you understand the topic, it is easy to expand on it.
– Retirement is out
of question yet. But in future, do you see yourself as a coach?
– It is very hard to talk about the future. Especially
after the four recent months… I won’t say anything. I will just go with the
stream, wherever the wave brings me – there I will try to show my worth. In
principle, that’s what I have always done.
